    A guide to the interpretation of sea trout scales

    The overall purpose of this guide is to provide a manual for the collection and interpretation of sea trout scales. A brief introduction considers the advantages and disadvantages of using scales to determine age and growth. To ensure that scales are interpreted in a consistent manner, all major terms are defined and a standard system for age notation is proposed. The methodology for the collection, mounting and interpretation of scales is described in detail, and this is followed by a section on the back-calculation of lengths at different ages. Each topic is discussed critically. The final part of this guide is an atlas illustrating scales from a wide range of sea trout and including not only excellent "type-scales" but also difficult and impossible scales

    Bacterial Interactions Affecting Chemotherapy Effectiveness

    Chemotherapy resistance is a recurring challenge in cancer treatment, with specific bacteria impairing the effectiveness of certain chemotherapies. This study reviews three bacteria and their impact on chemotherapy drugs: Mycoplasma and gemcitabine, Fusobacterium nucleatum and oxaliplatin, bacterial β-glucuronase and irinotecan. Bacteria can have wide-ranging effects on cancer treatment; for instance, they may affect drug metabolism, alter toxin conversion, and encourage cancer growth. Whilst the presence of these bacteria was found to have a detrimental effect on the efficacy of chemotherapy treatment, we also consider wider interactions and interdependencies of the microbiota with drug treatments. Some cancer therapies depend on the delicate balance of the microbiome whilst simultaneously disrupting it by their very nature, particularly when antibiotics are introduced. Further research into the complex relationship between bacteria and the tumour micro-environment is needed. Treatments that focus on the immune-oncology microbiome axis or that explore genetic predisposition through the use of biomarkers could also support a more personalised approach

    Long term condition monitoring of tapestries using image correlation

    Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is used to extract non-contact full-field three-dimensional displacement and in-plane strains from an historic tapestries. A DIC-based approach is devised that allows the effect of RH variations on a tapestry to be quantified. A historical tapestry has been monitored in a closely controlled environment and in the natural environment. The results revealed that very small variations in RH can have significant effects on strain. An automated long term monitoring approach has been devised to allow strain data to be extracted in real time from tapestries in remote locations. The results show that DIC provides better understanding of the effect of RH fluctuations on strain which will ultimately lead to more insight into the degradation process of historical tapestries. The paper demonstrates the potential for using DIC as a condition monitoring tool

    Response times for visually guided saccades in persons with Parkinson's disease : a meta-analytic review

    Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) show marked impairments in their ability to generate self-initiated, or “voluntary”, saccadic eye movements. Investigations of visually guided, or “reflexive”, saccades have, on the other hand, produced inconclusive results with studies showing response times (RTs) in persons with PD that are slower, faster, or indistinguishable from those of controls. We performed a meta-analysis to establish whether there are consistent effects of PD on the metrics of visually guided saccades. Combining results across 47 studies we found that reflexive saccades are overall initiated more slowly in persons with PD than in controls, however, this analysis also revealed considerable heterogeneity across studies. Step-wise meta-regression, using eleven potential predictors, subsequently showed that differences in mean RT between controls and persons with PD may arise due to aspects of experimental design. In particular, mean target eccentricity was shown to impact substantially on RTs such that persons with PD predictably initiate saccades faster than controls at small target eccentricities, while responding more slowly for large target eccentricities. Changes in eye-tracking and display equipment over the period covered by the review were also found to have impacted on the pattern of results obtained. We conclude that a, previously unsuspected, eccentricity effect could explain why the saccadic eye movements of persons with PD are sometimes found to be “hyper-reflexive” compared to controls, and suggest that this effect may arise due to PD-induced changes in both peripheral perceptual processing and in central executive mechanisms involving the basal ganglia

    Progress in strain monitoring of tapestries

    This paper reports interdisciplinary research between conservators and engineers designed to enhance the long-term conservation of tapestries (tapestry-weave hangings) on longterm display. The aim is to monitor, measure and document the strain experienced by different areas of a tapestry while it is hanging on display. Initial research has established that damage can be identified in the early stages of its inception, i.e., before it is visible to the naked eye. The paper also reports initial results of strain data visualisation that allows curators and conservators to examine how strain develops, thereby facilitating predictions about the changes in the form or condition of the tapestry. Strain data visualisation also allows the strain process to be recorded, thereby facilitating the effective documentation of display methods and conservation interventions. The paper reports the use of point measurements (using silica optical fibre sensors) and full-field monitoring (using 3-D photogrammetry with digital image correlation (DIC))

    Native submerged macrophyte distribution in seasonally-flowing, south-western Australian streams in relation to stream condition

    Submerged macrophytes are important structural and biological components of many lowland streams with potential to support ecosystem processes in degraded streams, provided that growth is not excessive. In a low-gradient agricultural landscape, a survey was used to explore associations between submerged macrophyte growth, biodiversity and variables assessing stream condition in seasonally-flowing streams. These variables were sampled across fifty-three reaches on seven adjacent streams in the mediterranean climate region of south-western Australia. Native submerged macrophytes were present in 43 % of sampled reaches, forming two distinct macrophyte assemblages dominated either by Potamogeton spp. together with Otteliaovalifolia, or by Cycnogeton spp. The Potamogeton/Ottelia assemblage was present in degraded reaches with higher light availability and deposition of fine sediments, but did not show excessive growth, even under nutrient-enriched conditions. Conversely, Cycnogeton spp. were associated with shaded conditions and greater flow. Reaches with macrophytes present had significantly higher macroinvertebrate abundance and family richness than those without, although rarefied family richness was similar among reaches with and without submerged macrophytes. The more structurally complex Potamogeton/Ottelia assemblage supported a greater abundance of grazers, shredders and predators than the simpler Cycnogeton spp. In degraded agricultural streams, remnant and colonising populations of submerged macrophytes may compensate for loss of riparian-derived habitat and resources for macroinvertebrates, and thus the food supply for predatory species

    A Requirement-centric Approach to Web Service Modeling, Discovery, and Selection

    Service-Oriented Computing (SOC) has gained considerable popularity for implementing Service-Based Applications (SBAs) in a flexible\ud and effective manner. The basic idea of SOC is to understand users'\ud requirements for SBAs first, and then discover and select relevant\ud services (i.e., that fit closely functional requirements) and offer\ud a high Quality of Service (QoS). Understanding usersÂ’ requirements\ud is already achieved by existing requirement engineering approaches\ud (e.g., TROPOS, KAOS, and MAP) which model SBAs in a requirement-driven\ud manner. However, discovering and selecting relevant and high QoS\ud services are still challenging tasks that require time and effort\ud due to the increasing number of available Web services. In this paper,\ud we propose a requirement-centric approach which allows: (i) modeling\ud usersÂ’ requirements for SBAs with the MAP formalism and specifying\ud required services using an Intentional Service Model (ISM); (ii)\ud discovering services by querying the Web service search engine Service-Finder\ud and using keywords extracted from the specifications provided by\ud the ISM; and(iii) selecting automatically relevant and high QoS services\ud by applying Formal Concept Analysis (FCA). We validate our approach\ud by performing experiments on an e-books application. The experimental\ud results show that our approach allows the selection of relevant and\ud high QoS services with a high accuracy (the average precision is\ud 89.41%) and efficiency (the average recall is 95.43%)
